THE DRAGON: A Soccer Novel for Boys Ages 9–14 | The Final Eleven. The Ultimate Rival. | Middle Grade Sports Fiction Series (First Eleven)

The wall always gave back what he put in. Europe doesn't work like that.

Marco Rivera is nineteen years old. He has a contract with FC Porto, forty words of Portuguese, and a map on his wall before he unpacks anything else. The Estádio do Dragão seats 50,000 people, and nobody in it knows his name yet. The game here is faster, colder, and more technical than anything he has ever faced, and the coach wants him invisible, two seconds ahead of everyone, reading the pitch like a map nobody else can see.

Then a veteran midfielder decides Marco doesn't belong.

Six thousand miles away, Coach Ray is still coming to the south wall every Tuesday at six-forty-five. Dante is at Feyenoord. Jay is with the Galaxy. The team that built Marco Rivera is scattered across two continents — and for the first time in his life, he has to find out who he is without any of them in the room.

Somewhere in Porto, there's a wall. It's not on Cesar Chavez Avenue. But it gives back what it receives, and Marco has been preparing for this room since he was eight years old.
