Description
This volume brings together three seminal texts of the Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch (Liu-zu tan-jing), the foundational scripture of Chinese Chan (Zen) Buddhism, presented in an integrated English translation.
The Platform Sutra records the life and teachings of Huineng (638–713), the Sixth Patriarch of Chan. It is the only text in the Buddhist canon not spoken by the Buddha yet honored with the title Sutra. Huineng’s journey—from an illiterate woodcutter to the successor of the Fifth Patriarch—represents a radical shift in Buddhist history: the emergence of Sudden Enlightenment (Dun-wu), emphasizing an immediate realization of one’s inherent Buddha-nature, untethered from complex rituals.
While traditionally attributed to his disciple Fahai, modern scholarship views the sutra as a composite work that evolved over centuries. To trace this evolution, this edition cross-references three essential manuscripts:
1. The Dunhuang Manuscript (T0002): Discovered in the early 20th century, this oldest extant version preserves the raw, unpolished, and primal voice of Huineng’s early teachings, largely free from later editorial accretions.
2. The Zongbao / Taisho Tripitaka Version (T2008): The standardized version that circulated widely after the Ming Dynasty. As the Chan school grew in influence, the narrative was refined for literary elegance and doctrinal authority, defining the Zen tradition for centuries.
3. The Jian-zhu (Annotated) Version (T2590): Compiled by the modern scholar Ding Fubao (1874–1952), this version provides rigorous philological analysis. By integrating classical Confucian and Daoist texts, Ding reveals the profound intellectual depth of the sutra, bridging Buddhist doctrine and traditional Chinese philosophy.
By exploring these distinct iterations, readers can trace how Huineng’s thought was transformed by history yet remained an immutable beacon of truth. It is my sincere hope that this volume serves as a genuine treasure vault for those seeking the path of sudden awakening.
